Locke & Key

Today I’m going to tell you about my most favorite graphic novel series ever, Locke & Key. This dark fantasy-horror series is a thriller with gore and ghosts and an old mansion and such a detailed and beautiful mythology, it makes my jaw drop open in awe. If I could just strap you down and hold your eyes open to make you read it, I would.

Locke & Key: Welcome to Lovecraft

Description:

Locke & Key tells of Keyhouse, an unlikely New England mansion, with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them. Home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all…

Notice how it goes out of its way to barely tell you anything? That’s because this series has so much packed in it, you can’t reveal much of anything without spoiling the series. Each and every page you dive deeper into the story, learn more, so that by the time you’re on volume three it’s so far removed from what was going on in volume one that it’s like you’re in another world.

The series is complete now, with six volumes, so it’s the perfect time to zip through the whole thing.

If you’ve never read a graphic novel series before, or think comics aren’t for you, give this book a try! Comics aren’t just superheroes, and a lot of stories are just perfectly told in this medium. Locke & Key is a beautiful example of what they can be, with two page spreads that… well, I can’t tell you what happens in them, because spoilers, but they are AMAZING. AMAZING. AMAZING.

A few years ago Fox was making a pilot for a TV series based on the graphic novels, but honestly, I’m glad they didn’t go through with it. They would just destroy this beautiful piece of wonder. For those curious, though, here’s the trailer–but be warned! It will spoil pieces of the first book for you. Of course, it also might make you go out and get the book faster, which is why I’m showing you.

Off with you! Read!

You should try some! Just like books vs movies or other mediums, they offer something unique. Also like with other mediums, every story isn’t for everyone. I think Locke & Key would be a good way to get acquainted with what they can do!

I would also suggest Saga, which I just read yesterday, as a book that really could never be translated into another format and done the same way. Just amazing.

Which reminds me that if you want to give them a go, your library should have copies for you 🙂

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 ^_^ and my most favorite, a manga called Parasyte, it’s really dark and sticks with you for a long time because it’s so psychologically disturbing. Couldn’t put it down.

I still would have loved to have seen Ksenia Solo as Dodge. Such a great series. I’m still sad it’s over.

Oh yeah, I still would have watched a show! 🙂 And yay, another Locke & Key fan! I want keys. Have you seen them online? They’re so pretty.

I could barely make myself read the last one because I couldn’t handle it being over. It was such a good ending though. I loved it.
