Types of Terror

I wanted to pose a question today: What is your favorite way to be afraid? However, I realized I was going to have to give you some examples to answer the question easily, which brought me back to the famous words of Stephen King (you've probably heard of him, he's kind of a thing). “The 3 types of terror: The Gross-out: the sight of a severed head tumbling down a flight of stairs, it's when the lights go out and something green and slimy splatters against your arm. The Horror: the unnatural, spiders the size of bears, the dead waking up and walking around, it's[...]

Women Horror Writers: An Interview with Amy Lukavics

Last week I put a call out asking women writers of horror to touch base with me about a new series I'm adding here on the blog. Very quickly, I received five enthusiastic responses. Amy Lukavics, gotta love her first name, is a huge fan of horror. I love her enthusiasm about our blog and she seems like a gem! Her novel, DAUGHTERS UNTO DEVILS, is soon to be published with Harlequin Teen. Check it out on Goodreads here: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18748653-daughters-unto-devils Thanks to Amy for allowing us into her mind and sharing her love of horror with[...]

Camp NaNoWriMo – Horror Style

Are any of you doing Camp NaNoWriMo? Now, I know that Camp NaNoWriMo isn't completely horror related, but it just so happens that the novel I'm working on for Camp NaNoWriMo is a YA horror novel, titled Katherine In the Lighthouse. Because if there's one thing that I think the young adult and new adult writing community needs, it's horror. The novel I'm working on is for an idea I had a while ago. I started writing it and I quickly fell in love with the concept and the characters. And then I had one of those realizations that you dread as an author. That what I[...]

Find New Haunting Reads

Hey there, boos and ghouls. I had a fantastic small town horror story I was planning on sharing with you today but here's the deal: it's not ready yet. My spidey senses haven't yet ferretted out all the details. These local hauntings can be tightly guarded, you know. So, until I can pry open some more tight lips, I thought I'd share a wonderful resource for finding new haunting reads... Goodreads.com! How many of you have bumped around on the Goodreads site? If you don't have an account, I urge you to get one NOW. It's supereasy. You can even sign up with your[...]

Eerie Finds at at Emerald City Comicon

I recently visited Emerald City Comicon, one of the largest cons out there, and spent a full day (open to close, 11am to 8pm) just going through artist alley. This con has gotten BIG. There is something for every taste. With that in mind, I've pulled out just a few of my finds, in the hopes of finding something of interest for every Midnighter out there. I'm going to start off with one of my favorite artist finds, Gillian Newland. Her booth was constantly swarmed and I had to try three times to get up there. One of the great stuff about her work is that while i[...]

Penny Dreadful

The Midnight Society loves a good creepy movie, so when I first saw the preview for the new Showtime Original Series Penny Dreadful, I knew I had to share. The geniuses behind the show have taken the dark and twisted characters from classic tales like Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, and Dracula. Set in Victorian London, this series looks like it will bring on the creepy darkness of all our favorite horror characters--with a huge twist. I have a feeling this series will be a huge hit! Harry Treadaway, plays Dr. Victor Frankenstein--he needs no introduction.   T[...]

The Smiling Man – A True Story by Blue_Tidal

If there's one thing I love, it's a good scary story. And even more than that, I love it when a scary story is equal parts scary as it is creepy. And what  I love even more than that, is when said scary and creepy story is real. The following story I read one night on Reddit, and it was creepy. I knew it was good because as I read it, goosebumps crawled up my arms. Then, later that night, after I read it and I was home alone, I wanted to read it again. And again. Because it had stuck with me. I found myself wondering what I would do in the same situation. Then[...]

Don’t Let Them See You’re Afraid

It is a known fact that many of us here at the Midnight Society have a love of things both dark and circusy. So, submitted for the approval of the midnight society, I call my favorite dark circus movie you’ve never heard of: Helena’s family owns and performs in “The Campbell Family Circus: The Best Little Bigtop Alive”. But it may not be alive for much longer. Helena’s mother has fallen suddenly sick and is in the hospital, and the rest of the cast is mutinying, ready to flee for other circuses. Then a strange alleyway performance one night draws Helena[...]

Real Life Creepy Places, Part II: Dyatlov Pass

Today’s Real Life Creepy Place is not just a place but an event. An event that took place almost sixty years ago and to this day no one has any answers, only theories as to what really happened in Dyatlov Pass in the night of February 2nd 1959, when a group of nine tourists died under extremely strange circumstances. Dyatlov Pass is located in the northern Ural mountains, in Russia, on the mountain Kholat Syakhl. The mountain pass where the incident occurred has since been named Dyatlov Pass after the leader of the tourist group, Igor Dyatlov. In the Mansi l[...]
