New York Comic Con

What am I excited about? 1. Stephen Amell- autographing 2. Amber Benson- autographing 3. Reinventing Horror For seven years at NYCC, Mark L. Miller (Ain't It Cool News, Pirouette) has gathered a ghoulish ensemble of creative minds to discuss and dissect how they create nightmares and what (if anything) scares them. This year, Mark gathers a talented Panel of Filmmakers, Writers and Artists to discuss how to reinvent and revitalize the horror genre; pushing new limits, twisting new concepts and crafting new terrors to keep you up at night! 4. DC Comics – Batman:[...]

The Dark Carnival Cover Reveal!

Today I am proud. So proud. Over a year ago I had an idea. I love horror and I love carnivals. I said to Kristen, the co-founder of my other blog Pen and Muse, "What if we did a writing showcase? One that involves a Dark Carnival?" We ran with the idea and to my shock and awe, we met our sign-up goal of ten people. And the list kept growing. In fact, almost one hundred different authors and illustrators signed up. I was shocked. I was elated. I was longing for the dark and creepy things to crawl out of their minds. Each person had to pick one ride or event at[...]

The Witches of MisSpelled

A last minute announcement for the approval of the Midnight Society: today is the last day for the MisSpelled web series Kickstarter! Drop everything and go support it, tweet it, make it a reality. Because this is a series that fans of The Society are guaranteed to love. MisSpelled follows the story of five New Adult girls as they discover they are witches and bumblingly attempt to figure out what to do next with their powers. The characters are all quirky and interesting, and after watching the promologue I wrote the series off as a cute comedic urban fantasy--[...]

Vintage Photos You’ll Wish You Hadn’t Seen

Have you ever seen a photo so creepy it didn't just send chills up your spine, but up your entire skeleton? Yep, the horror lover in me lives for that. But something interesting happens when I see a creepy photo that is vintage. I don't know how or why but the scary level increases to maximum. Since Halloween is nearly upon us, I thought I'd compile a group of the creepiest vintage photos I've seen... and you'll wish you hadn't seen. Muahahaha. Enjoy!                   So? What do you thin[...]

Cover Judgin’

They say not to judge a book by its cover--but screw that. I think that's all metaphor--book covers are there to be judged. Tell me, what are some of your favorite pretties? Follow Midnight's board Book Covers That Give Us Chills on Pinterest.[...]

Edgar Allan Poe- The Raven

You may have heard from a little birdie there will be a poetry contest here on the blog in October. Well...that's the truth! I'll be posting more information soon, but to tied you over until then I thought I'd post my absolute favorite poem of all time. If you think you might be interested in winning some wonderful prizes for the best October themed poem, get ready:) The Raven BY EDGAR ALLAN POE Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—     While I nodded, nearly napping,[...]

Los Angeles Haunted Hayride

Last year I happened upon a few pictures on Instagram. I was in love. I was confused. Where was this glorious thing? Where could I find a Merry-Go-Round made of skulls?! Turns out, all this and more can be found at the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride. What is it you ask? The Los Angeles Haunted Hayride is put on at Griffith Park (at the old zoo). It runs the month of October. You can find the schedule here. If you've ever been to any of the Halloween events that theme parks put on, such as Knott's Scary Farm or Universal Studio's Haunt, I assume this will be[...]

Reclaim Horror: Coming Soon

The Reclaim Horror series will begin in November after The Midnight Society's Halloween festivities next month. Horror has always received stigma, but never has that been more contradictory than it is today. Romance has domesticated horror creatures like vampires and zombies. Genre labels like dark fantasy and supernatural thriller avoid the visceral, negative reaction associated with horror. People equate horror with gore when in reality horror is much more than that. All this gentling makes no sense in a nation that loves horror. The most-watched TV shows last[...]

Me & Tate Langdon 4Eva

The new season of American Horror Story is just on the horizon and I am SO excited to see the show's token bizarre creepiness taken in this freaky direction. (Kira did a speculative post about the upcoming season here.) I'm doing cartwheels over Evan Peters (who is a total cutie butt, and I only feel like a little bit of a dirty old lady saying it) coming back, this time as Jimmy Darling, son of the freak show owners. Last season, Peters' character Kyle Spencer was a bit wasted. He was something of a Frankenstein's monster, which is a neat concept, but the writ[...]
