Horror Magazines

As you may know, I work part-time at a brick and mortar bookstore. And no, I won't tell you which one:) Anyway, I was doing a little zoning of our magazines and low and behold, there were these few precious gems among the stacks. You guessed it, there were horror magazines! Of course, I had to flip through and check them out. One thing I found interesting is that there was pop culture combined with old school horror. And monsters galore! Magazine #1: Rue Morgue- The Poe themed magazine caught my eye first. The main focus in this month's installment is the creep[...]

Hidden Gem: The Loved Ones

Here's the next installment of Hidden Gem. There are so many great horror movies out there—both domestic and foreign—that don’t get the love they deserve, usually because they don’t fall under the mainstream film category (like say the Friday the 13th movie franchise or Scream does). So for my second post on Hidden Gem, I’m focusing another favorite of mine: The Loved Ones. Hidden Gem: The Loved Ones This is another film that I discovered thanks to Bree Ogden. This is a film that you either have to luck into on TV or buy. Or, if you're in[...]

Camp Grizzly: A bloody love letter to slasher movies.

There are few things I love more than slasher movies---they're horror stripped down to it's barest, dumbest essentials, and it's wonderful in all of it's confused, faux-morality tale wackiness. I also love board gaming, and in the past fifteen years tabletop gaming has exploded as hobby. In fact, the most interesting work in horror today is coming from game designers. If you want atmosphere, great art, and fun, horror games is the place right now. If you've never played any recent board games, I can't recommend it enough. The thing that makes it great is th[...]

iZombie

There’s a cool new zombie show on the CW called iZombie. The story—adapted by Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas, originated as a comic published July 2010, by Vertigo—an imprint of DC Comics. If this line up of awesome doesn't get you chanting: Rob Thomas and DC Comics and zombies, oh my! I'd be surprised. And this is NOTHING like any zombie story you've ever heard of. Liv, a talented medical resident who has it all together, attends a fancy party on a yacht. After refusing to take a new drug, the yacht is suddenly under attack by zombies. Liv is scratched[...]

MTV’s Eye Candy

I was super disappointed to get the news this weekend. A new TV show that I've fallen in love with has been cancelled. This is basically my life. I'm cursed. The moment I like a show, it's cancelled. Have you guys heard of EYE CANDY? Have you heard of Eye Candy? Eye Candy is adapted from a book by R.L. Stine. Eye Candy (show) is about a hacker named Lindy who reluctantly joins the world of online dating. Once immersed in it, one of the men she's dating turns out to be a total creep and deadly stalker who targets her and anyone who she loves. Eye Candy stars V[...]

Reclaim Horror: Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children has been on the New York Times Bestseller List for more weeks than there are in a year. This highly successful novel screams horror to all but the following entities: Amazon calls it Fantasy & Supernatural. The top shelves on Goodreads are Young Adult, Paranormal, and Mystery. The Peculiar Children Wiki categorizes it as fantasy. Let's look at the synopsis (obvious horror blurbage in bold): A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage.

A strange collection of very curious photographs. It all waits to be[...]

Monsters of Dr. Who… THE DALEKS

This is the first of my series on the monsters of one of my favorite shows... DR. WHO! On the third Friday of each month come celebrate the creepy of a show that has been around for 50 years. But... but, KATHY! Dr. Who is science fiction! What is it doing on a horror blog? Because it's scary! That's why. Geez, don't you trust me? The Daleks have been around forever. Conceived by Terry Nation, they first appeared in the episode 'The Dead Planet' in 1963. Every single regeneration of the Doctor has faced these terrible beings, making them the greatest enemy[...]

Urban Legends

The first urban legend I ever heard was the legend of the hook man. I was probably five or six and by that time, I was already addicted to scary stories and movies. My dad would turn the living room lights down and tell the story. My brother and I hung on every single word. Sure, little things changed here or there, but for the most part the key elements of the story remained the same. Have you heard of the Hook Man?   Let me summarize it for you. A young couple out on a date is parked at a lover's lane, kissing in a car. They've been interupted once or[...]
