Monsters of Dr. Who… THE DALEKS

This is the first of my series on the monsters of one of my favorite shows… DR. WHO!

On the third Friday of each month come celebrate the creepy of a show that has been around for 50 years.

But… but, KATHY! Dr. Who is science fiction! What is it doing on a horror blog?

Because it’s scary! That’s why. Geez, don’t you trust me?

The Daleks have been around forever. Conceived by Terry Nation, they first appeared in the episode ‘The Dead Planet’ in 1963. Every single regeneration of the Doctor has faced these terrible beings, making them the greatest enemy of Dr. Who.

On the planet Skaro, the two races, the Kaleds and Thals, were involved in a thousand year nuclear war.  Their bodies mutated from the chemicals, so the Kaleds turned to their chief scientist Davros for aid.

Davros from episode “Resurrection of the Daleks”

He created a tank-like outer shell called the Mark 3 travel machine to house their deformed bodies.

But he went further.

He genetically modified the race, removing their ability to feel pity, compassion, and remorse. Leaving hate. They thought of themselves as the supreme race and sought to destroy all inferior life forms. That would be EVERYONE.

They travel the universe with one thing on their minds. Exterminate.

Having a laser pointed at you with no hope of survival is one thing. But to think that inside these casings exists organic matter that once had been a living being, one capable of good emotions, really gets me. The horror lies in removing all kindness, leaving only a swirling pit of hate – a race of beings whose sole purpose is to annihilate every living thing.

It’s been just over 50 years of their terror. So, meet the Daleks.

The Fourth Doctor (the greatest one!) had a chance to go back in time and kill Davros, but couldn’t, not wanting to become the monster.

But through it all, the humans, lead by our dear Time Lord The Doctor, fought back.

The Doctor even destroyed the entire race, which also destroyed his race of the Time Lords, in the Time War… or so he thought. They returned.

They always return. And death comes with them.

Don’t hate me, but I’m NOT a Doctor Who fan. Multiple people have tried to get me into it, and I just…can’t! But awesome post as always! 😀 LOL

Yessssss Doctor Who! It’s definitely not all light hearted sci-fi fun. It deals with some dark shit sometimes, which is why I love it so much.

Love Doctor Who and I’ve been going through the Classics. I’m not sure the Daleks are my favorite villains. The ones that really scare me are the Weeping Angels. They give me nightmares.

Oh… they are my favorite. I’m saving them for later. All monsters get their turn. 🙂 In all fairness, the Daleks have been around forever.

You know, horror really hasn’t come up with a really good creature, a la the Daleks, in a very long time.
