Counting Casualties Podcast: Gothic Fiction

I woke up this morning to rain and cold, and while making coffee and blearily looking onto the cross-street below from my kitchen, I noticed a hearse, a limo, six pallbearers, and a maple coffin being carried into the church across the street. I've lived in this apartment three years now, and this is the first time I've seen a proper funeral procession walk into that place. I realize this makes me a bit morbid, but with the weather as it is, all I'd really need to throw at this scenario to turn it into a plot bunny is Guns n' Roses playing "November Rain" in t[...]

Yes, Gone Home really is a horror game.

Late last year a kerfuffle broke out on twitter about video games, one of the many, many, many targets of the ire was the critically acclaimed game Gone Home. People said it was too short, it wasn't really a video game, it cost too much, it was marketed as a horror game when it wasn't one--- Whoa, whoa, back that up, sparky. Not a horror game? Okay, if you haven't played Gone Home, stop reading this now, buy the game, and play it. You'll thank me. There's a lot to love here, from the riot grrrrl soundtrack, to the voice acting, and the '90s references. Thi[...]

Steampunk Frankenstein

Steampunk would lend itself to the classic Frankenstein monster beautifully, but I actually haven't found that much in the way of steampunk Frankenstein monster's out there. (If you've found something, leave it in the comments!) I did find Rick Baker's costume. Rick Baker is a famous special effects artist, and he put together this interpretation to celebrate his M.A.C. Cosmetics makeup line. What do you think? Doesn't it beg for a Frankenstein steampunk retelling? Who's going to sign up to write it?  [...]

Ghost Hunters

It all began with a Tweet. It's like a whole new world has opened up to me. I never thought there'd be multiple groups in my area who research and hunt ghosts. Actually, you can search for ghost hunters that have set up show in every state. Now, I haven't checked out whether or not I can go for a ride along or not, but I'm considering it. How about you? Would you want to actually go on a ghost hunt?[...]

April Book Club: The Cemetery Boys by Heather Brewer

Released on March 30th, The Cemetery Boys is the latest from New York Times Bestselling Author Heather Brewer, who wrote the The Chronicles of Vladmir Tod, among other things. Synopsis When Stephen is forced to move back to the nowhere town where his father grew up, he’s already sure he’s not going to like it. Spencer, Michigan, is like a town straight out of a Hitchcock movie, with old-fashioned people who see things only in black-and-white. But things start looking up when Stephen meets the mysterious twins Cara and Devon. They’re total punks–hardly th[...]

Horror Film Trailer Roundup, Spring 2015

There are some really good looking horror films slated for release this year. There are also some less than good looking horror films slated for release this year. This post is a simple roundup of some of the scares coming soon to theaters. A couple of these look campy and funny, some look downright horrifying, and a few... well... I can't really even figure out what they're supposed to be about. See if you can tell which is which. https://youtu.be/DS3IwAMXPSg   https://youtu.be/GHPWZe26gec   https://youtu.be/eX3iGKQeNks   https://youtu.be/qS[...]

Reality Inspires Fiction

Hi again! Today I want to share when horror dreams come true. And no, not those dreams. If the dolls from my nightmare had dragged me down the stairs, I would still be screaming. I'm talking about when your favorite creepy fiction has a basis in reality, for when those two world collide... fabulousness happens. One of my all time favorite scary books is Stephen King's THE SHINING. The creep factor in this one blows me away. I've read it a few times and will never think that a hedge animal is something cute. I also knew that he wrote this book after ha[...]
