Frankenlove Interview with Author Mackenzi Lee

Today we have a real treat on The Midnight Society: an interview with Mackenzi Lee, the author of the upcoming Frankenstein reimagining, THIS MONSTROUS THING. I actually decided to start calling this post series "Frankenlove"after talking with her on twitter. She's fun, she's knowledgeable, and she loves Frankenstein! So here we go... Do you remember first falling in love with Frankenstein? What drew you to the story? You never forget your first time, do you? My first exposure to Frankenstein came in high school, when it was one of our optional summer reading bo[...]

Horror, Comics, and Graphic Novels

As many of you know, I work part time at a brick and mortar book store. Being a bookseller, blogger, author, and social media surfer--I get a front seat to the current trends. Some I can see coming from a mile away, while others seeming come from out of nowhere. And guys, the horror genre is DEFINITELY on the rise! Once upon a time, comic books were collected by a distinct group of people. When I was a teenager, it wasn't cool to read comics. But now? It's waaaaaay cool to be spotted with a graphic novel in your bag. And let me tell you, with the rise in Marvel a[...]

Best Summer Ever with SYNC

For the past several years I've partaken in AudioFile's Sync summer program. What is it? AudioFile's Sync program basically connects you (the reader) with fantastic and free audiobooks over summer. Each week two ebooks are up on their site and you can download them for free. They always pair one YA novel with a classic novel. They do this to promote reading, literacy, and listening in young people across the nation. Straight from their website: SYNC gives away 2 FREE audiobook downloads every week each summer. In 2014, 26 titles were given away over 13 weeks. I[...]

Are you a Fannibal yet?

For my very first post at Midnight Society, I talked about my love for cannibals, and specially for Hannibal. For those of us who are insane for the show, we're called Fannibals. We've seen all the episodes (at least once, probably three times) and we are in awe of the brilliance and all the feels it gives us. The show is a total mind-f*ck, but it the best of ways. I'd argue that it's the best horror on television, which is why it shocks me beyond words that NBC is the one who is behind Hannibal. You wouldn't think that a network like that would be okay with[...]

Poltergeist, the Remake… A Mistake?

Being a horror fan, when I heard of the remake of Spielberg's 1982 movie POLTERGEIST, my reaction should have been... However, it was more like... Why? I am a fan of the original. There is nothing wrong with it. So many people, including many of us here at The Midnight Society, have been scarred for life by the clown doll, kid-eating tree, and child-devouring closet. Fabulous stuff, people. So, a remake? From this... to this... The trailers made it obvious that the special effects were... well, special. But was this movie the same story with updated[...]

Wow,  we have two amazing interviews coming up. Today, we have Courtney Alameda, author of the amazing Shutter, and on the 10th, we'll have the fab Mackenzi Lee, of the soon-to-release This Monstrous Thing! Between the two of them, we're covering the great old ones of horror from Frankenstein to Dracula.  Courtney Alameda is back with Trigger, a short story in the Shutter-verse, which you can find at Tor.com (the story will go live at 9 AM EST). BEA 2015 Horror Edition

Each year I merrily make my way to NYC for BEA. For three whole days, I submerge myself in the book life and every time I make new friends and get fantastic books. This year was no exception; however, there were a handful of thrilling new things that happened and I can't help but share them. 1. I got my hands on an amazing ARC of new YA horror! Look at the inside...soooo cool!   2. THIS BOOK may not necessarily be considered horror, but seriously kick ass protagonist...yes, please!                 3. I[...]

Real Life True Horror

A real-life creepy thing happened to me today. It JUST happened so naturally my skin is still crawling. I should share it with you. I'm sure in time I will but man... I've been freaked out ALL DAY. It got me thinking about real-life creepy things. About true horror stories. About tales with twists and turns that sound absolutely like a nightmare...but they aren't. They are real life. One of the coolest things about horror movies and horror novels is that we can stands by and watch something utterly terrifying in the safety of our rooms, couches, or blan[...]
