Vote for You Favorite Banner

Since I've taken to writing a weekly blog post about writing horror, we've decided that my posts need to have a name. Coming up with a name was simple, especially since Jolene and Faith did all the work on brainstorming a list for me to choose from. With that nailed down--Writing Bloody--Faith has created a few banners to use too. The problem is, I'm not quite sure which one to pick.   This is where you come in. Which banner is your favorite? Let me know in the comments and I'll announce the winning artwork next Tuesday!   1.  This one is simple, le[...]

The May Queen Murders Cover Reveal + Interview

And... BOOM! Look at that gorgeous cover! It's like Lana Del Rey's art director mated with the first season of True Detective at a street art convention. This one's going on my shelf where I keep the books with covers I can't stop looking at. (Special thanks to YA Book Central for letting The Society in on the fun, you can find their original reveal here (Oh hey, its a giveaway too)). It gets even better! Here's the book description: Two girls: one with a secret, one with a promise that she’d uncover it. Welcome to Rowan’s Glen—a pla[...]

Part 1 Hidden in the Red Hill Mountains is the quiet town of Hollows Grove. In that town, there is a field where a secret is buried deep beneath the ground. And in that field is where Mila was found abandoned with no memory of her past and haunted by visions of the future. Nine years later, Mila’s life is almost as normal as any other eighteen-year-old. That is until she starts foreseeing the murder of Nyjah Bradley, a guy she’s never met before, but whose face is branded into her mind. Twisted Tuesday

Well, it's another Tuesday and I'm thinking about my writing--what else is new, right?! The last two weeks, I posted about how writers get their ideas for horror stories. Sometimes we all have a great idea, but we aren't sure how to get from point A to point B. Lately I've been stuck in a rut with my ideas, so I've taken to watching a few good shows and movies to help me. More and more I watch with a critical eye, rather than just enjoy the film. I want to learn more about writing and what really makes a good story. Of course I lean toward horror, but I've also t[...]

TGIF: Thank Gothic; It’s Fabulous!

I had great fun in recent weeks reading Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, a Gothic novel described by my friend as "miserable people treating each other miserably in a miserable setting." I loved it! First, there were moors for drowning. Also, when a ghost scratched at a window, the narrator accepted her appearance as plausible before he got the explanation! Finally, Heathcliff is so wicked, so so wicked that I love him and hate him in equal measures. This reading got me thinking that I've never appreciated Gothic fiction the way I should, so join me on a[...]

Annie Knowby Battles the Evil Dead in Beyond Dead by Dawn

Most horror fans are intimately familiar with Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead series, and those that aren’t soon will be with the upcoming Ash Vs. Evil Dead TV series. Evil Dead is about to become huge again, and that’s great news for fans of Bruce Campbell, the Deadites and horror fans everywhere. Over the years, Evil Dead and its two sequels have been adapted and expanded into other mediums. There have been video games, comic book series, and even a musical. While some of these were straight adaptations of the source material, the ones that I’ve enjoyed the most[...]

The Monsters of Dr. Who… Autons

It's Dr. Who day! For all of us who know that the fabulous BBC show is more than science fiction. Horror lurks in the timey-wimey stuff. And today, scary comes in the form of everyday things. The Autons first appeared in the episode "Spearhead from Space" in 1970, meeting the Third Doctor played by Jon Pertwee. Classified as robots, they serve the Nestene Consciouness, an alien entity bent on conquering the Earth. The Autons are anything plastic, given life by Nestene energy. Imagine walking down a street when the mannequins in a store window suddenly move,[...]

Who’s the Monster Here?

Frankenstein's monster's stitches were done so roughly in the original film so people would immediately look at him and know he was a monster. Those stitches have since become a symbol for the monster. You can paint your nails black and green, with stitches tieing the colors together, and people will get the reference. Look at your monster nails! But the theme we come back to when we talk about Frankenstein, is that the creature wasn't the monster. Victor, the doctor who created him, was. He created this person, for his own selfish reasons, with no thought to[...]

Let’s Talk About Ideas: Our Answers

So last week, I posted a few questions for us all to think about. Horror writers have to be inspired by something to get the story ideas that they cultivate into scary novels and films. But the question is, where? How? And just so you know, not all horror writers are crazy;) So, for all of you out there that wonder where the hell it all begins...here are a few answers: Where do your ideas for a new story come from? 1. My ideas come from taking all the things I love and slamming them together until they work. 2.  My brain is sort of always marinating in a 80s ste[...]
