New #Horror: Fear the Walking Dead

Last Sunday, the first episode of Fear the Walking Dead aired on AMC. The acting, writing, and production value I've enjoyed on The Walking Dead are here as well, so I'll be watching the second episode tonight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDxew5SguVw One of the reasons zombies are such a popular trope right now is how ripe (ha!) they are for the thematic explorations of our world. In the first episode, the following concepts were introduced. Check out how timely they are: 1. Addiction The show opens on Nick Clark (played by Frank Dillane), a heroin addict,[...]

‘Fear The Walking Dead’ Shows Promise

(NOTE: I will keep this review as spoiler-free as possible, for those who have not seen the first episode of Fear the Walking Dead yet.) I was very pleasantly surprised by the premiere of Fear the Walking Dead (FTWD) this past Sunday. I believe it actually has the potential to be a better show than its predecessor, if the show doesn’t squander its biggest asset--the fact that it’s set before the full-blown zombie apocalypse. See, I don’t care why the outbreak started--in fact, I hope we never find out. What FTWD is exploring so far (and granted, it’s o[...]

The Tale of the Reoccurring Goblin

Hello, kittens.   We all have that one story we like to tell at parties. You know the one I'm talking about. It usually starts with "It happened to a  friend of a friend of mine..." They're usually just trendy retellings of our favourite urban legends. They're supposed to capture your attention in between drink refills, not scare you. I never thought any of them were true...until I heard the story of the goblins. Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society, I call this story "The Tale of the Reoccurring Goblin".     I remember it l[...]

The Count Everyone Forgets

Mea culpa, mea culpa, maximum mea culpa. Dear readers, we here at the Society work hard to bring you quality content. We cover all things horror, from books, to games, to movies, so this oversight on our part is inexcusable. If you decide never to read us again, I understand. We're all doing a lot a of soul searching right now. There's many Counts in horrors--Dracula, The counting Count, Countess Bathory, but we here at the Society have criminally ignored the one, the greatest Count of all. The one. The only. The Count Chocula. Count Chocula was first introd[...]

The Nightmare

I've always been fascinated by the phenomenon of sleep paralysis. According to numerous web articles, Sleep paralysis is a phenomenon in which a person temporarily experiences paralysis. This can be while they falling asleep (referred to as Hypnagagia) or while they are awake (known as Hypnopompia), When I say paralysis, I mean the person is not able to move, speak, or react to anything. They are stuck, held within the silent prison cell of their own body.   It Gets Worse... If being paralyzed, but acutely aware of what is going on around you isn't ter[...]

A Fearful Introduction

Hey everyone! My name is Jenna J. and I am new around here!!! I am super excited to be a part of The Midnight Society!!! Like, you really don’t understand the depths of my excitement. I am a writer who loves horror, young adult novels, and watching endless amounts of Netflix. I am a twenty something girl who lives in California and works in accounting at a university. I am someone who is still trying to figure out where I belong and what I belong to. I am an introvert to the core and I am not very good with people. But that’s all the boring stuff. On to[...]

Monsters of Dr. Who… Weeping Angels

As old as the universe. No one knows where they come from. The Weeping Angels of Dr. Who. In 2007, the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) met these creepy statues in the episode "Blink". Created by Stephen Moffat, these aliens quickly became the scariest monsters on the show.   Look at them and they are unable to move, quantum locked, which protects them... the ultimate defense. However, look away and they attack, moving extremely fast, surrounding their victim in the blink of an eye. Their serene faces twist into an evil snarl with vampire-like teeth. The[...]

Birthdays and Serial Killers and Books! Oh My!

Today is a very special day, because today is the creator of The Midnight Society's birthday! That's right, it's the anniversary of Jolene Haley's entrance to this realm. This lady is relentlessly supportive, so I thought we should celebrate her existence by being supportive right back! One month from now, on September 22nd, you'll be able to read the very first novel in The Woodsview Murders series, Harrowed. It's been cowritten by Jolene Haley and Brian LeTendre (another member of The Midnight Society!) Haven't heard about it? Here are the details: Journal[...]

Writing Bloody- Series vs. Serial

My favorite TV show of all time--Buffy the Vampire Slayer--is a series. What does that mean? Well, a series is a show with the same characters throughout, but the each episode is a different story. Take the Once More with Feeling episode. Admittedly one of my favorites, the characters are compelled by a demon to sing their truths. One episode. That's it.   https://www.reddit.com/r/fivenightsatfreddys/comments/357bqm/was_it_me_teaser_megathread/ Yes, BtVS does have a thread that is carried throughout each episode--the love between the Slayer and th[...]

The Horror of Gatsby

I’ve spent some time in the past year reclaiming horror, but I’m not going to do quite that with The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Still, it’s my favorite book, and I’ve enjoyed writing about the spookiness of the green light. Today’s post is about how and why Fitzgerald plays with horror elements in this work. Gatsby’s Mystique The first time Nick sees Gatsby, we get this description: “The silhouette of a moving cat wavered across the moonlight and turning my head to watch it I saw that I was not alone—fifty feet away a figure had emerge[...]
