Special effects makeup wasn’t something I necessarily thought I’d be into. I mean, it sounds neat enough, but would I really want to watch a show with people putting on makeup? The answer is apparently yes, yes I would. And not only so I enjoy watching the show, but it continuously inspires me as a writer to work harder and push myself further. And as a lover of the dark and twisty art of the world? This definitely tickles my fancy.
The show is called Face Off, and it airs on Syfy (I’ll never get used to writing Syfy, by the way. I pronounce it siff-eee, and say that if they wanted me to pronounce it SciFi, they should maybe spell it that way!). It’s a reality competition show, where the artists are given challenges to make characters and are then judged by a panel and knocked off week by week.
You watch the artists rise up to a challenge to create a character. Not just the makeup, but they create a whole back story for who this character is and what they are doing in their lives. A reaper living in the graveyard, with a cross stuck to their back, or the sorcerer from Swan Lake done in an industrial revolution style. The characters are unique and interesting and as a writer constantly remind me that when you’re creating characters, you can create ANYTHING, so you should never make something boring.
Below are five awesome examples of work done on the show…
You can check out more characters created on Syfy’s Face Off, or other Dead & Lovely makeup from around the internet, on The Midnight Society’s Pinterest board.

One of my favorite shows! The Jim Henson Creature Creation challenge is another great show! In the deepest part of my heart, I hold a wish to be a creature creator, to take the things in my head and make them real. My path didn’t take me there … not in this life anyway.

Kathy PalmI really want to watch The Jim Henson Creature Creation, but I haven’t seen it yet.
It seems like it would be a really great job! The way they do it right on the spot like that gets my creative juices flowing.
