Some Beautiful Brevity
I love short stories. Writing them and reading them. During the busy holiday months, short stories are perfect. I love bite sized pieces of beautifully creepy prose or soul jarring scares that fit into those small stolen moments of reading.
A few of my favorites, should you be looking for short pieces of horror heaven during the holidays:
Beautiful Sorrows by Mercedes M. Yardley
Really. If you haven’t read her, do it now.
The Moon Will Look Strange by Lynda E. Rucker
In the Tall Grass by Stephen King and Joe Hill
Gothic! Ten Original Tales edited by Deborah Noyes
The Curiosities: A Collection of Stories by Stiefvater, Gratton, and Yovanoff
When it comes to writing, short stories come easiest to me. It’s my natural length. I love the beauty of brevity. Many times my story ideas come from images and I will share a few with you that have snagged my imagination lately.
And of course anything by Brian Froud.
What are some of your favorite short stories?
Kira Butler
I’m a big fan of basically anything that comes from Shadows & Tall Trees at Undertow, and if it’s edited by Ellen Datlow, I’ll probably read it too.
Faith McKay
Love Brian Froud!
And short stories.
It’s not horror, but one of my favorites is “Boojum” by Elizabeth Bear & Sarah Monette in Fast Ships, Black Sails. Space Pirates! https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3369511-fast-ships-black-sails?from_search=true I’ve also always loved Harrison Bergeron https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10176119-harrison-bergeron?from_search=true
