Christmas Horror on the Big Screen

If you've tiptoed through The Midnight Society's cemetery, you know a few things about us. Watching horror flick that fit the season is one of them. We are all pretty versed in A Nightmare Before Christmas by Tim Burton. This is a definite favorite here, but there are so many more horrors that surround this December holiday. GREMLINS One of my all-time favorite movies from my childhood is Gremlins. Who knew Christmas could be so crazy?? The Rules: 1. No food after midnight. 2. No water. 3. No bright light. As each of those rules are violated, chaos ensues. T[...]

3 Vampire Books You Need to Read – Blood, Teeth, and Eternity

I love a good book recommendation, and it doesn't take much to convince me to grab a new vampire tale. The three books below feature characters who kick ass and face monsters outside and within themselves. There's a lot of neat mythology here--though there's only three books, the third is an anthology from some great authors who really use the short form to play with their own ideas for the undead. That's something a really great vampire story has to have to keep me hooked: details for the vamps. Do they turn to dust? How do they die? I wish more stories said how[...]

What I’m Thankful for: Horror Edition Part 2

It's almost my favorite day of the year...Thanksgiving. Not all of the family will be at the house this year. We'll be missing my sister and brother-in-law, but I'll still have 16 of my loved ones all under the same roof. Cooking for this many is a lot of work, but I still love hosting this celebration. Last week, the planning of this huge dinner was just a label for a new board on Pinterest. Today I type Part 2 of my thankful post with the aroma of pecan pie swirling in the air. Yum! What I'm Thankful for: 6.  The CW I know last week I gave a shout out for the[...]

Dias de Muertos

Halloween has come and gone, and already the stores have started stocking holiday items. I hate this feeling -- the one you get when you see tinsel and prefab knit stockings two weeks before the clock strikes midnight on my favourite holiday of the year. I hide at home. Don't go into stores. Try to avoid the red and green and silver. It's too soon, and I'm not ready to let go quite yet. Being November 1st, I'm still holed up in my apartment, still sitting in my Halloween costume, trying to convince myself that's it's not over yet. And you know, it sorta is and i[...]

Halloween Memories and Tragic Tales

When I was a kid, my uncle and aunt threw FANTASTICAL Halloween parties. They lived (still live) on a wooded mountain in Maryland. It was my very favorite place to go. I'd stay at their house as often as my parents would allow it. (I would have moved there completely, but don't tell my mom because her feelings would probably be hurt.) My uncle first got me into horror movies when I was probably 7 or 8.  They were the old horror movies that started with "The". Y'know, The Fog. The Thing. We'd eat chocolate chips and raisins, mixed in just the right ratio in our m[...]

Movies for Halloween

Creepy Movies to Watch in October The Orphanage It’s no secret that I’m a Guillermo Del Toro fangirl (the mess that was The Strain notwithstanding). In cinematic form, the man masters spine-tingling, bone-chilling creepiness like no one else—and does it in a gorgeously minimalistic way. No blood fountains and guts spillage here: the psychological terror is much, much worse, and it stays with you for days. The Orphanage is less known than Pan’s Labyrinth or Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark; Del Toro produced it for a less-known director who's a friend of hi[...]

The Witches of MisSpelled

A last minute announcement for the approval of the Midnight Society: today is the last day for the MisSpelled web series Kickstarter! Drop everything and go support it, tweet it, make it a reality. Because this is a series that fans of The Society are guaranteed to love. MisSpelled follows the story of five New Adult girls as they discover they are witches and bumblingly attempt to figure out what to do next with their powers. The characters are all quirky and interesting, and after watching the promologue I wrote the series off as a cute comedic urban fantasy--[...]
