It’s Father’s Day…AND I WANT MY CREEPSHOW!!

Creepshow is one of my all-time favorite '80s horror flicks, for a number of reasons. The movie was a love letter to the old EC horror comics. It was the brainchild of Stephen King and George Romero. And as I wrote about last year, it features one of the greatest soundtracks of all time.  And the fact that Father's Day is this weekend gives me another great reason to revisit this classic, because the opening tale in this anthology is a little gem named after the holiday itself. https://youtu.be/1bO3gyT3Imc Father's Day features a family of rich, entitled dou[...]

Ray Fawkes’ UNDERWINTER Will Haunt You

I had no idea what to expect when I sat down with the first issue of Underwinter this week, but I'm still thinking about the book days after I read it. It's a hauntingly beautiful horror story that reminds me a lot of Hellraiser with a splash of Eyes Wide Shut thrown in. Underwinter follows the story of a group of four very talented musicians--a string quartet that has seen better days. They get offered a very high-paying gig at a posh estate--if they can follow the rules of the performance. The book opens with one of the characters recounting a nightmare th[...]

Faith’s Favorite Frights #1

Locke & Key is one of my favorite horror comics, ever, so naturally I was super stoked to hear they had a one-shot on the way. According to my local comic seller, who had never read Locke & Key, this is a great way to try out the series and get yourself sucked in if you've never read Locke & Key before. This story came out last week, AND IT'S AWESOME. Even better: in the letters in the back, they say they WILL have a new, seventh volume coming out! And they have plans for more. YES PLEASE! Pick this up at your local comic book store, or get it dig[...]

VENOM Is Back!

There was a time that Venom was a horror character in the Spider-Man universe. And if the first issue of Mike Costa's new Venom series is any indication, the horror is back. For those unfamiliar, the story of Venom began in Marvel's 1984 Secret Wars event. Before there was Venom, there was an alien symbiote that was initially thought to be a new and improved costume for Spidey. But in fact, it was an alien lifeform, and as it bonded with Peter Parker, it began to corrupt him. When Peter finally broke free of it, the creature bonded with a host that h[...]

Review: Afterlife With Archie #9

Afterlife with Archie has returned after a long hiatus, and wasted no time in reminding everyone this may be the best horror comic going right now. For those that haven't been reading this series (and you really need to be), the undead apocalypse was started when Jughead tried to have Sabrina resurrect Hot Dog, his beloved pet who had been hit by a car. But Hot Dog came back as something...different. And with one bite, poor Jughead became the first of Riverdale's residents to turn. Since then a small group of friends have grouped together to try and stay alive,[...]

Creepy Comics: Carnage

I am a big comics fan--I've been hosting a comic podcast called Secret Identity for ten years now with a buddy of mine. Being a lifelong horror fan as well, I'm always on the lookout for a decent horror comic, and it's rare that I am genuinely surprised by one. Which is what makes marvel's new Carnage series such a pleasant surprise. I love Spider-Man, and have read many a spider-related title over the years. For those that don't know, Carnage is the fusion of an alien symbiote and a serial killer named Cletus Kasady. He's one of Spider-Man's most dangerous and[...]

Constantine: The Hellblazer Provides Jumping-On Point for TV Fans

If dug the very short-lived Constantine TV series, and want to follow more of the character's adventures, you should be checking out Constantine: The Hellblazer. It's a prefect series to dive into the character with, as it requires no prior knowledge of the character, and there's enough of the spirit of the TV show to feel familiar. James Tynion IV and Ming Doyle have crafted a first story arc that provides an interesting mystery while giving us a look at John Constantine's origin as well. The simple set up is that Constantine is haunted by the ghosts of every[...]

Sabrina is Scary as Hell

When I say "Sabrina the Teenage Witch," what image comes to mind for you? This one? Or this one? Or perhaps even this one? Well, unless you've been reading her most recent comic series, I'm guessing it's not this one: If you haven't checked in on everyone's favorite teenage witch lately, you may have missed the memo--Sabrina is scary as hell. In fact, through four issues, I can honestly say Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is one of the scariest, most disturbing comics I've read in years. And if your familiarity with her is through the late 1990s TV show,[...]

Annie Knowby Battles the Evil Dead in Beyond Dead by Dawn

Most horror fans are intimately familiar with Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead series, and those that aren’t soon will be with the upcoming Ash Vs. Evil Dead TV series. Evil Dead is about to become huge again, and that’s great news for fans of Bruce Campbell, the Deadites and horror fans everywhere. Over the years, Evil Dead and its two sequels have been adapted and expanded into other mediums. There have been video games, comic book series, and even a musical. While some of these were straight adaptations of the source material, the ones that I’ve enjoyed the most[...]
