A Review of Rosemary’s Baby

This week's horror movie review is...Rosemary's Baby (1968). I just happened upon this DVD while looking through the shelves at my local library. It's not like I've never heard of this movie, but I never really was drawn to Rosemary's Baby. Until now. Once upon a time, horror movies would build tension with music and layering the story. Rosemary's Baby does all of these things. I mean, you know in the beginning that something bad is going to happen, but not how. Many horror movies start out with young couple checking out an apartment. Things always begin so n[...]

M. Night Shyamalama-ding-dong

Confession: I'm a fan of M. Night Shyamalan. Dude gets cast plenty of shade for his cinematic misfires, which are plenty. But when he gets it right, he gets it right. And even when he doesn't get it all the way right, I still sit there and think "Okay, yeah, I see what you were trying to do there..." and I recognize the creative intent and I get how the wheels were turning in his brain even if it didn't all quite come together. I think his biggest problem, for sure, is that he is stuck in the Watch This Twist Ending! cycle from which he can not escape. It's expect[...]

The Trio

The Trio, also known as Andrew Wells, Jonathan Levinson, and Warren Mears teamed up to take over Sunnydale. The Trio--as they became known--came together to create shrink rays, invisibility ray, prototype jet packs, and chicks chicks chicks. Iksnay on the urdervey (I may have this spelled entirely wrong, but originally Jonathan and Andrew are against killing Buffy). None are Jedi masters, but they do have certain abilities, like summoning demons and flying monkeys, creating an anatomically correct Buffy robot, and augment reality. Alone they may have gone unnot[...]

My Favorite Buffy Scene

Depending on the day, my favorite Buffy episode tends to change. Well, I can't help it. I love them all! But whenever I'm asked I DO have a special scene the I love. Sunnydale is about to be overrun by The First and all it's demons from hell. There's evil priest named Caleb (played by the fantastic Nathan Fillion) who wants Buffy d-e-a-d, dead. Spike has a soul and finally figures out his role in the whole end of the world thing. The slayer wanna-be's stage a coup, leaving Buffy on her own and Faith suddenly in charge. Xander walks around like a pirate, because[...]

This Year’s Girl

Even Buffy the Vampire Slayer celebrates the New Year in style--what with hunting and killing demons and all. Mix in a little of crazy Faith out of coma...and bang you have a terror-filled evening. Season 4 episode 15 opens with Buffy and Faith discussing the fresh smell of clean sheets. Because that's exactly what you'd do with Adam on the loose and Riley hidden away by the Initiative. Let me be frank with you. I'm not a complete fan of the Buffy episodes with Riley as her boyfriend. Yeah, I know that her love of Riley made her more human, but Buffy is suppose[...]

A New TV Horror Series: CONSTANTINE

I will admit something here that I rarely say aloud because I'd get rotten tomatoes thrown at me, or cursed as I walked down the street. Here it goes--please don't judge me--I do not like British shows. I know, I know. You all love watching Dr. Who, Sherlock, The Game of Thrones, EastEnders, and Downton Abbey. I just cannot get into these shows. It might just be that I don't enjoy having to pay too close attention to decipher what the characters are saying with thick accents. I'm not sure what it is, but I have found a show with a Brit as a main character. And[...]

What I’m Thankful for: Horror Edition Part 2

It's almost my favorite day of the year...Thanksgiving. Not all of the family will be at the house this year. We'll be missing my sister and brother-in-law, but I'll still have 16 of my loved ones all under the same roof. Cooking for this many is a lot of work, but I still love hosting this celebration. Last week, the planning of this huge dinner was just a label for a new board on Pinterest. Today I type Part 2 of my thankful post with the aroma of pecan pie swirling in the air. Yum! What I'm Thankful for: 6.  The CW I know last week I gave a shout out for the[...]

The Strain

This weekend, my Direct TV box went dark. Very, very dark. Although I can watch everything I've recorded, I can't watch regular TV or record any of my shows. Which totally sucks. I've missed THE WALKING DEAD and THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, just to name a few. In preparation for returning this box and in order to get it replaced with a new one, I've been binge watching what I have already saved. Some shows I deleted. I can't watch everything, so I deleted many things I can live without seeing. One show I kept to watch is THE STRAIN. I'm not quite sure why I never wat[...]

Reclaim Horror: Coming Soon

The Reclaim Horror series will begin in November after The Midnight Society's Halloween festivities next month. Horror has always received stigma, but never has that been more contradictory than it is today. Romance has domesticated horror creatures like vampires and zombies. Genre labels like dark fantasy and supernatural thriller avoid the visceral, negative reaction associated with horror. People equate horror with gore when in reality horror is much more than that. All this gentling makes no sense in a nation that loves horror. The most-watched TV shows last[...]

Me & Tate Langdon 4Eva

The new season of American Horror Story is just on the horizon and I am SO excited to see the show's token bizarre creepiness taken in this freaky direction. (Kira did a speculative post about the upcoming season here.) I'm doing cartwheels over Evan Peters (who is a total cutie butt, and I only feel like a little bit of a dirty old lady saying it) coming back, this time as Jimmy Darling, son of the freak show owners. Last season, Peters' character Kyle Spencer was a bit wasted. He was something of a Frankenstein's monster, which is a neat concept, but the writ[...]
