Krampus Takeover

This year more than others, it feels like Krampus is everywhere. On ornaments and sweaters and coffee mugs OH MY! And I can't say I'm upset. His horns, long tongue, and evil grin adorn the world with fear and delight. Let's celebrate Krampus! A Krampus Carol Last October this anthology from Burial Day hit the world. Edited by Cynthia Pelayo and Gerardo Pelayo, this book offers thirty-one stories and poems, one for each day of December. I've been reading one each day this month and live-tweeting my reactions on #AKrampusCarol. So far, each story offered[...]

Even the season of hope has a dark side.   First, let's watch the chaos unfold as rules are broken and terror invades a town in Gremlins. This 1984 film written by Chris Columbus and directed by Joe Dante delighted me as a child. From adorable Gizmo to terrif[...]

We get Thanksgiving (Canadian here) Halloween, and then it's Christmas! I fucking love Christmas. I love shopping and eating cookies and hanging out in my jammies. I'm SUPER pregnant so I'm hoping I don't calve before then haha. Wish me luck! Anyhoo - this has a point. It's Horror Origins month here at the Midnight Society, so I chose this week's blog based on one old bad ass...Krampus. Sorry Jolene,[...]

Edgar Allan Poe- The Master of Gothic Horror

Hey everyone! I've been gone for quite awhile, and I have missed you all! My life has taken a few twists and turns, so I needed to take some time away. Buuutttt, now I'm back! And what a time to blog...gothic horror month! It's not a secret that I am a huge fan of Edgar Allan Poe. I mean, I do have a raven tattoo on my wrist! Every year, I'm lucky enough to have Poe as part of my curriculum. Teaching 8th graders about this fascinating and disturbed man; along with sharing his famous writings, is what I look forward to each year. And while I love all of his stori[...]

Christmas Horror

It's that time of year, when I plant myself in front of the Hallmark channel and watch cute movies until my insides glow like Christmas lights and my heart grows three sizes. And I love it. Usually when January hits, I watch non-stop horror just to reduce my heart to normal size and counteract the glow of the season. But maybe I need a bit of balance during the month of December. There are alternatives to sickly sweet love stories and tales of finding the holiday spirit, maybe a few where the Christmas spirit tries to kill you. When a new scary movie release[...]
