Thoroughbreds Is Not Heathers – It’s More

Thoroughbreds is not Heathers. It seems like every movie with teen girls and dark humor invokes Heathers. Heathers came out in 1988, and it was shocking and perfect for the time. It captured, as nothing before it had, the cynicism of students, the toothless administrators, and the deep emotional cruelty of teen girls. Veronica’s crush on the dangerous new boy in town resonated with young women, and they were empowered by her rejection of him when he went too far. Thoroughbreds is not Heathers. It’s something more. It’s quiet. It’s slow moving[...]

All The Single Ladies: Why I Love Hag Horror

I recently visited with two of my favorite crazed older ladies at a theater performance of Arsenic and Old Lace. The stage play, written nearly 80 years ago, is a madcap romp that takes place in the living room of Martha and Abby Brewster. The sweet, spinster aunts are serial killers - strictly to give peace to nice, older gentlemen, you understand - but unfortunately, they aren’t the only killers in the family. You could say there is some family competition on who is better at it. The Brewster aunts of the 1940's gave rise to a plethora of unhinged film la[...]

Let’s Talk Horror Movies: Winchester

Greetings, horror movie lovers. There's a new movie out. Just this month, Winchester arrived in theaters. Directed by Michael and Peter Spierig and written by the Spierigs and Tom Vaughn, the story is inspired by  the legend of Sarah Winchester and the Winchester House. Of course, I took myself to see it.   My fellow Midnighter The Davis Girl suggested I jot down my expectations or pre-viewing thoughts to compare with my thoughts post-viewing. I didn't have a lot of expectations, going into a book or movie I am ready to accept what the writers want t[...]

Let’s Watch a #Horror Movie: Silent Hill

February, time for hearts and flowers and chocolates and giant cuddly teddy bears...and strange, scary other dimensions with monsters and a town haunted by the past. I love watching horror movies with friends, so join me for this month's live-tweet of Silent Hill. As I searched through my movies, this one called to me. It's been too long since I've enjoyed the descent into the madness of a town haunted by secrets. We all need creepy nurses, Pyramid Head, and the rage of a little girl. Based on the horror video game, Silent Hill was released in 2006 and directe[...]

Let’s Watch a #Horror Movie: Annabelle: Creation

Let’s watch a horror movie! Annabelle: Creation! Doesn’t that sound like fun? Of course it does. Watching scary movies with friends is the best! And what could be better than demons and dolls? Nothing. This 2017 horror movie was directed by David F Sandburg and written by Gary Dauberman and is the prequel to the 2014 movie Annabelle and ties in nicely to that movie. We all remember that creepy possessed doll fondly and this movie shares the doll’s origin. Because why wouldn’t you want to know? Samuel and Esther Mullins, played by Anthony LaPaglia and[...]

Midnight Review: They Look Like People

Having seen and loved everything from Invasion of the Body Snatchers to The Thing to The Hidden, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what I was in for when I started watching Perry Blackshear’s They Look Like People. I was wrong. https://youtu.be/MrsUOmKlAzI They Look Like People is psychological horror at its best. The movie establishes a level of tension in the opening scene that becomes the baseline for the entire film. Of course things get way more tense from there, but after that opening scene, the tension level never returns to normal. This movie is[...]

Let’s Watch A Horror Movie…Sinister

I'm late with the announcement, but I didn't know if I would have a free Friday. BUT I DO!!!! So let's watch a horror movie!!!! For July...Sinister.   This 2012 British-American supernatural horror film was directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill. And scared the living whatever out of me. The Oswalt family moves into a new house. Isn't that always how it starts? Ellison Oswalt is a true crime writer, so he moves his wife and two kids into a house where people were, well, murdered. Yeah...like that... He's t[...]

Let’s Watch a #Horror Movie…1408

Every month I get together with my horror-loving friends and live-tweet a scary movie. Because it's more fun with friends. This month I will be watching the 2007 psychological horror movie 1408, based on the Stephen King story of the same title. If you haven't read the story...do. I love it! Super creepy and weird and mind warping fun! You can find it in one of his anthologies.   The movie is pretty different than the written version. The main story is the same, just amped up a bit. When making a short story, rather than a full novel, into a movie there'[...]
