WHY ARE YOU AFRAID OF THAT? The Origin of Our Fears

Not just any fears, but yours. What are you afraid of? Why? There are irrational fears, of course, things that just make us quiver for no reason at all. Then...then there are those real life things that have affected us. A snake bite causes a fear of snakes. A fall creates a fear of heights. Then there are the things that never would have crossed our minds to fear...until we saw it in a movie or read it in a book. That big tree outside your window was fine, until you watched POLTERGEIST. No reason to fear your dreams, until Freddy. Summer camp? No big deal, un[...]

Let’s Watch Horror Movies…Christmas Edition

I love horror movies! I love to live-tweet them too! Once a month, precious, I tweet all my thoughts and feelings as I watch a scary movie. I didn't know how much fun it would be. To be able to watch it with others makes it more fun. Through Twitter, we can connect over our love of the creepy. Last month my horror friend Andrea and I had a BLAST live-tweeting the movie Lights Out. Neither one of us had seen it, so it was a lot of great first reactions. I haven't been so scared watching a movie in a loooooong time. I held my breath through most of it, but you bette[...]

October History: A Look Back at Horror Movies Released in October

It's October History Week at the Midnight Society, so of course I wanted my post to be related to horror movies in some way. So I decided to look back at the history of horror film releases in October, and what I found was kind of interesting. Over at www.the-numbers.com, you can check out movie releases by month and year. So, I started looking back at what horror films were released in October back in the day, and outside of a few milestone movies, October didn't really become a month known for horror flicks until the early 1980s. In fact, October didn't reall[...]

Let’s Watch a #Horror Movie…The Possession

It's that time again, where I announce the horror movie I will live tweet for this month! Because if you're like me, you don't have any friends who like to have their minds assaulted by creepiness. And this is wrong. So let's watch... The Possession Meet Clyde and Stephanie. Formerly married, now living apart and sharing custody of their two daughters. Emily "Em" and Hannah. Who are not so thrilled to be staying with their dad. At a garage sale, Em finds a wooden box with Hebrew writing. She's drawn to it. She wants it. Her father buys it for her. But t[...]

A Selection of J-Horror Movies for Every Horror Fan Type

The ever-so amazing Kira has a list of her essential J-Horror movies here for you to pick from and  I previously mentioned the movies you can find on Amazon streaming and Netflix here. And as I mentioned before, J-Horror is my favorite horror. I think K-Horror (Korean) and C-Horror (Chinese) are really spectacular as well, but J-Horror was kinda my first and you always have special feelings for your first. And previously, our wonderful Erica mentioned how she has trouble with gore movies, so it got me thinking--I used to hate gore too, but now I can stomac[...]

The Perfect Horror Movie Buddy…A Girl and Her Dream

This is usually the post where I announce the scary movie I will live-tweet this month. Unfortunately, horror movie friends, because of vacations and children's desires to BE INVOLVED IN ACTIVITIES... ugh, kids... I will not be live-tweeting a movie this month. *hands out tissues* I know. I know. I have become incredibly attached to my live-tweets. I have so much fun, sharing my thoughts on the strange, unusual, and terribly creepy movies with everyone. Thinking of you all out there, smiling (or cringing) as you read my tweets makes me a happy gal. If yo[...]

Restoration: An interview with Christian Ackerman

Hello Kittens!   I have quite the treat for you. As you know, my Midnight Society pals and I ingest horror in a multitude of different ways. We read it, we write it, we play it, listen to it, draw it, design it, and we watch it. We watch a lot of it. Which is why I'm so, SO excited that Christian Ackerman is joining us on the blog today. You may know him from his newest release, RESTORATION, which he acted as both associate producer AND a medic.   I could spend the next few paragraphs telling you all about Christian, or I could let the interview b[...]

Let’s Watch a #Horror Movie…MAMA

I love ghosts, truly my favorite part of the world of horror. They fascinate me. So for this month's movie I chose one of my favorite ghost stories. Co-written and directed by Andres Mushietti, with the fantastic Guillermo del Toro as executive producer, Mama hit theaters in 2013. Dude. I went. And I was the only one in the theater. Empty theaters are creepy...in case you wondered. The shadow play from the flickering light caused me to glance into the space around me more than once. I had a blast! So, the movie! Let's watch it, shall we? TOGETHER! YES.[...]

DIEmonds in the Rough: Maximum Overdrive (1986)

First off--RIP Prince. There will never be another. Welcome to another installment of DIEmonds in the Rough, where we search for the bloody nougat center of awesomeness inside a hard shell of mediocrity. This week’s installment In Maximum Overdrive, a comet passes by earth and the planet ends up in the tail of it for a little over a week. During that time, the machines of the world--everything from electric steak knives to gas-powered lawnmowers--become sentient, and rebel against mankind. The movie was written and directed by Stephen King himself, and was ins[...]
