The One That Got Away – Final Girls

We love final girls. There's nothing better than having the main character that you're rooting for, make it all the way to the end! She can suffer again in the sequel, no doubt and hopefully at the end of the series, make it out alive! Member Kira wrote The Horror Movie Survival Guide for the Discerning Final Girl and it's one of my favorite posts ever. There are certain rules that one must abide by in order to survive. Like no sex or being curious allowed...if you want to survive. If you haven't checked it out yet, you should. Because well, it very much coul[...]

DIEmonds in the Rough: Freddy Vs. Jason (2003)

Welcome to another installment of DIEmonds in the Rough, where we search for the bloody nougat center of awesomeness inside a hard shell of mediocrity. This week’s installment takes a look back at the slasher showdown that was Freddy Vs. Jason. The year is 1993. The movie is Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday. After sitting through a movie in which Kane Hodder’s Jason is only onscreen for about ten minutes (which should be a crime), fans are treated to arguably the greatest ending scene of all time. As Jason’s mask lies half buried in the dirt, the famous[...]

Let’s Watch a Horror Movie… THE BABADOOK

HAPPY NEW YEAR, HORROR FRIENDS!!!!! 2016 shall rock. I know for I am magic.   You may remember, dear Midnighters, my desire to find friends to watch scary movies with me. No one in my house likes the spookiness. And though I am not opposed to sitting before the flickering screen of weirdness alone, it's more fun with people who appreciate it. So I announced that once a month I will live-tweet a horror movie! On the first Friday of each month I shall reveal the movie, the date, and time. And you will join me... *waves hand* *uses Jedi mind powers* Last[...]

Happy 50th, Ted Raimi!!

Ted Raimi--one of my favorite actors of all time--turned 50 this week, and I took a stroll down memory lane to revisit some of my favorite roles of his. While his older brother Sam often gets the spotlight for directing movies like Evil Dead and Spider-Man, at least some of his success should be attributed to the awesomeness that Ted Raimi brings to his brother's projects. Take Evil Dead 2, for example. Ted played the wonderfully disgusting Henrietta, wearing a cumbersome latex suit. Henrietta has some of the best scenes in the entire movie, including the fight[...]

Let’s Watch Horror Movies!

Happy December, Midnighters! I have an idea. I brilliant idea to bring all us horror lovers together. Do you like watching horror movies? Do you have anyone to watch them with? My hubs and kids do not like my scary movies. I have a drawer full of creepy and watch them alone. I go to the movie theater... alone. Those who would watch with me live far away. Overall, I don’t mind, but it would be fun to be with friends. Why not bring us together? Kinda. I ANNOUNCE THAT I SHALL LEAD A LIVE-TWEET OF A SCARY MOVIE ONCE A MONTH! We can all gather around ou[...]

Let’s Play UNTIL DAWN for #OctFearFest (Ep. 3)

My October Fear Fest series of let's plays continues this week with the second installment of UNTIL DAWN.  For those that missed the first couple episodes, you can watch them here. If you haven't heard of UNTIL DAWN, it's essentially a game where you as the player are directing your own slasher film. Every choice that you make has a ripple effect on the story, and who lives and dies will do so because of your decisions (or lack thereof). For #OctFearFest, I'm doing a let’s play series with UNTIL DAWN, and I’ll be posting the episodes both here are over[...]

Happy Slasher Week + My Favorite Slasher Revealed

Happy Slasher Week!!!                   Wait, that sounds weird when I say it out loud. *shrug* Happy slasher week! As most of you know, slasher horror is one of my favorite kinds of horror. Growing up, I absolutely loved Michael Myers, Jason, Freddy Krueger, and everything in between. Cabin in the Woods was A-MAZ-ING. Scream is still one of my go-to favorite movies of all time. Our love for the slasher genre is what led to Brian and I writing our book together. What is it about slasher books and slash[...]

Growing Up Scared… 80s Horror

Welcome to October Fear Fest here at The Midnight Society! It is our favorite month of the year when all the ghosties and ghoulies come out to play. Mwahahahahaha! Horror history week! I give you a glimpse of 80s horror. I remember the horror in my history. I am a child of the 80s and there are a few movies I watched as a kid that stuck with me, that still give me chills, that left images permanently burned into my mind. I can't say that I knew I liked horror back in the good ole days. I only knew that if my dad was watching it, it must be cool. And no matte[...]

Let’s Play UNTIL DAWN for #OctFearFest (Ep. 1)

In addition to being a huge horror fan, I'm a lifelong gamer. So, anytime those two interests can overlap, it makes me very, very happy. And it just so happens that a game arrived recently that not only combines my love of horror and games, but does so with my favorite kind of horror movie--the slasher film. UNTIL DAWN is a game where you as the player are essentially directing your own slasher film. Every choice that you make has a ripple effect on the story, and who lives and dies will do so because of your decisions (or lack thereof). For #OctFearFest, I'll[...]
