Courtney Alameda Interview! Giveaway! Short story!

Wow,  we have two amazing interviews coming up. Today, we have Courtney Alameda, author of the amazing Shutter, and on the 10th, we'll have the fab Mackenzi Lee, of the soon-to-release This Monstrous Thing! Between the two of them, we're covering the great old ones of horror from Frankenstein to Dracula.  Courtney Alameda is back with Trigger, a short story in the Shutter-verse, which you can find at Tor.com (the story will go live at 9 AM EST). Courtney's debut blew my mind into all sorts of pieces, large and small, and she was kind enough to answer a hai[...]

Real Life True Horror

A real-life creepy thing happened to me today. It JUST happened so naturally my skin is still crawling. I should share it with you. I'm sure in time I will but man... I've been freaked out ALL DAY. It got me thinking about real-life creepy things. About true horror stories. About tales with twists and turns that sound absolutely like a nightmare...but they aren't. They are real life. One of the coolest things about horror movies and horror novels is that we can stands by and watch something utterly terrifying in the safety of our rooms, couches, or blan[...]

The Subtle Storytelling of Bloodborne

I love it when everything I think I know about writing horror gets turned on it's head. One, it helps me to grow as a writer. Secondly, it means I got bloody well scared during the process. Bloodborne, the newest game for the Playstation 4 from From Software, did both these things. Yet, on paper it shouldn't have. First it's gothic horror, which hasn't been scary in years (but it's the last refuge of solid atmosphere) and it's cosmic horror, which is probably the hardest subgenre to pull off. Don't get me wrong, I love them both, but that doesn't change the fact[...]

Reboot of IT Circles the Drain

I took a deep breathe when I saw this Tweet yesterday: Stephen King @StephenKing · May 25 The remake of IT may be dead--or undead--but we'll always have Tim Curry. He's still floating down in the sewers of Derry. 2,473 retweets 4,280 favorites Reply Retweet2.5K Favorite4.3K Oh my! You all know that It is my favorite Stephen King book, and that Pennywise had me scared to death of clowns (which I saw after I performed as a clown in my high school's production of Barnum). I was ridiculously interested in how a new version would look, even though I don't think[...]

Monsters of Dr. Who… Morbius

It’s the third Friday of the month and I know you’re excited for Dr. Who day! Where I search for horror in a sci-fi show, which isn’t difficult at all. In my last post, we met the Daleks, who run rampant throughout the series, however, today’s monster appeared in one episode. The Brain of Morbius was originally broadcast in 1976, written by Terrance Dicks and Robert Holmes. The Fourth Doctor and his fabulous companion Sarah Jane... land on the rocky planet Karn littered with wrecked spaceships and a headless body of the alien. Of course in true Doc[...]

Silent Hill 3: Every Bit as Good as 2

The first 4 Silent Hill games are an astounding mix of terror, great characters, heartbreaking feels, searing honesty, and beautifully grotesque atmosphere. One through Three three are utter masterpieces that transcend their medium and should be recognized as art (the originals, not the terrible HD rerelease), while SH 4: The Room is just really, really good. If you only know Silent Hill through the movies, be warned. They resemble the games in the same way I resemble my cat that died a few years ago. If you ask the average SH fan which one is the best[...]

Horror Mamas

Happy Mother's Day to all the mamas out there! In honor of the holiday, I compiled a list of some of the greatest Horror Mamas. Of course, it's a list based on my personal tastes (but I have pretty great tastes). They are in no particular order. Mrs. Vorhees of FRIDAY THE 13th Not many people know this, but Jason wasn't the killer in the original Friday the 13th. In the original, it was Jason's mama, Mrs. Vorhees. She went around killing people for they did to her son—letting him drown in the lake. That's one devoted (and demented) mama. Norma Bates of B[...]

Ghosts, Zombies, and… Faeries?

Horror takes many forms. From the guy with an ax in the woods, to the inner workings of an insane mind, to monsters in the closet. But what about faeries? And I'm not talking Tinkerbell, even though in the book her temper is a little scary. I'm referring to the Fae. Ummm... scary? Most of them play tricks,  cause problems. Some merely desire to trap humans. But others want to devour people. I offer three movies brought to you by the epic Guillermo del Toro, featuring Fae that will certainly make you think twice about stepping into a mushroom ring.  [...]

Hidden Gem: The Loved Ones

Here's the next installment of Hidden Gem. There are so many great horror movies out there—both domestic and foreign—that don’t get the love they deserve, usually because they don’t fall under the mainstream film category (like say the Friday the 13th movie franchise or Scream does). So for my second post on Hidden Gem, I’m focusing another favorite of mine: The Loved Ones. Hidden Gem: The Loved Ones This is another film that I discovered thanks to Bree Ogden. This is a film that you either have to luck into on TV or buy. Or, if you're in[...]
