YA Zombie Book Round-up

There's something creepy about zombies. Sure, perhaps it's the carnal rage or unquenchable thirst for your brain. That certainly makes me prefer to never encounter one. I like my brain where it's at, thank you very much. But at the very core, I think it's deeper than that. There's something unsettling about things that should be dead, but did not stay that way. I think that's also why I love ghost stories so much. The Midnight Society member Amy did a YA zombie book round-up that you can spy here, but I want to add to that list with a few of my recent reads. L[...]

New YA Horror: Secret of McKinley Mansion by K.F. Breene

It was a dark and stormy night... But then, it was always stormy when she came. Beckoning. Calling to her followers. And follow her they did - never to be seen or heard from again. Larkin, MO, is not the cute, sleepy town it appears to be. Beneath the quaint façade lurks a secret - a secret everyone knows, but no one will talk about. Everyone knows to keep curfew. To stay in on stormy nights. To avoid that big, empty house up on the hill. Until one day, a new family moves to town... Add to Goodreads // Check it Out on Amazon.com  [...]

Where to Query Your YA Horror Novel (Part 1)

I have a campy YA horror novel that is struggling to find a home. The market isn't as strong for YA horror as it is for say, contemporary romance. I know what you're thinking--but what about authors like R.L. Stine or Stephen King? Darling, they are outliers. Sometimes when I go to ALA or other conventions and ask publishing houses about current YA horror that I should have on my radar, they're not as quick to have recommendations for me as they are for other genres.  Not always, of course. Sometimes they grace me with a zillion recommendations and it's love[...]

Interview: Jolene Haley and Brian LeTendre

Hello, Darlings!!   I am SO thrilled to have our very own Horror Twins, Brian LeTendre and Jolene Haley, on the blog today! They graciously let me feast on their brains about their books, both past and upcoming. So I'll stop boring you and just hop right in!   How did you two start writing together in the first place? Brian: I was lucky enough to participate in a few of the Pen & Muse writing showcases (Dark Carnival and Haunt), and I was a big fan of Jolene's because she's such a positive force in the writing community. I asked her to be a gu[...]

#HorrorTwins Cover Reveal! Are You Ready for #OrchardPointe?

You know what I love? Creepy towns with secrets. Amusement parks have always felt ominous to me. Crowds of people happily running around, blind to what's going on around them in their joy. The rides are running--death traps if I've ever seen one--carnival food consumed by the bucketful, made by people peering out at the cheery park goers who don't know anyone in that town or have any reason to care about what happens when your food is made. It's hot, the day is coming to a close, there's a magic in the air that could be great, or could be.... something....else. A[...]

Japanese Horror in YA: The Girl From the Well

When the rest of the crew suggested to do a month devoted to J-Horror, I was like, what? I hate to admit it, but I did not know what J-Horror meant! Thankfully they explained and I was excited! Who wouldn't want to learn about Japanese horror? It was something I didn't know much about. If you don't either, that's okay! The fabulous Amy wrote a post about it just the other day. You may want to start here. You know much I love young adult novels, so I set out to find a few J-Horror inspired young adult novels and I was NOT disappointed. Check it out. Hello J-Horro[...]

Harrowed is Here! #WoodsviewMurders

Journalism Rule #1: Always report the story. Never become the story. Avery Blair has accepted the fact that nothing exciting ever happens in her small town of Woodsview, Massachusetts. As the editor of the high school blog, she prays for something—anything—to come along that would make for a great headline. When Beatrice Thompson’s body is found in the girls’ bathroom, Avery has her biggest story ever. The rumors circulating the school say that Beatrice took her own life, but Avery doesn't believe it for a second. Her instincts prove true when the next[...]

Birthdays and Serial Killers and Books! Oh My!

Today is a very special day, because today is the creator of The Midnight Society's birthday! That's right, it's the anniversary of Jolene Haley's entrance to this realm. This lady is relentlessly supportive, so I thought we should celebrate her existence by being supportive right back! One month from now, on September 22nd, you'll be able to read the very first novel in The Woodsview Murders series, Harrowed. It's been cowritten by Jolene Haley and Brian LeTendre (another member of The Midnight Society!) Haven't heard about it? Here are the details: Journal[...]
