iZombie

There’s a cool new zombie show on the CW called iZombie. The story—adapted by Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas, originated as a comic published July 2010, by Vertigo—an imprint of DC Comics. If this line up of awesome doesn't get you chanting: Rob Thomas and DC Comics and zombies, oh my! I'd be surprised. And this is NOTHING like any zombie story you've ever heard of. Liv, a talented medical resident who has it all together, attends a fancy party on a yacht. After refusing to take a new drug, the yacht is suddenly under attack by zombies. Liv is scratched[...]

Keep Calm and Kill Zombies

I'm working on a series right now about zombies. Kind of. It's about an all girl pop band fighting zombies. (Check out my pinterest board, I think it's ridiculous fun!) This has me doing lots of reading about weapons (and listening to an absurd amount of pop music), so I thought I'd open up everyone's favorite debate... What would be your weapon of choice for zombie slaying? Are you someone who wants something up close and sharp? Blunt? Something you can use from far away? What do you think will increase your odds? You can take more than one, but my ultimate tra[...]

Creepy Cocktails and a Haunted Interview with Jonathan Maberry

Halloween is the best time to hold a huge bash. I mean the kids get their fun by dressing up and Trick-or-Treating, so why can't the adults have fun too? For those of you who are planning an ADULT Halloween party this year, we thought it would be fun to give you some zombie inspired cocktail ideas. And for those who are holding a horror book themed party, there's no better author to pair these with than Jonathan Maberry (click on links for recipe and website information).      Zombie Slime Shooters              [...]

Zombie Juice: The Formula for a Monster Smoothie

When I started writing seriously a couple of years ago, a few things had to change to support my habit. When you work a demanding day job, and you often stumble out of the office craving a little more than what the nine to five offers, you need to establish certain routines that support the extra shamble home. The people who tell you to exercise and eat right? They've got the right idea. The better shape your body is in, the better likelihood you've got to plant yourself in front of a keyboard for a few extra hours every night and churn some words that don't suck.[...]

Your Favorite Zombies

What's your favorite zombie mythos? I really enjoy it when writers take a common mythology and put their own spin on it. I mentioned Hollowland a couple weeks ago, and I was a big fan of the unique, and disgusting, take on zombies. In a completely different vein, Midnight Society's very own TA Brock has the Fatal series, where the zombies are only gross for a brief time near the end. The Other Life by Susan Winnacker has zombies, called Weepers, who have a rabies mutation. Still, my favorite zombies, are probably The Walking Dead, which is part of why I think i[...]

The Way the World Ends

Hollowland - the first book in the young adult dystopian series The Hollows... "This is the way the world ends - not with a bang or a whimper, but with zombies breaking down the back door." Nineteen-year-old Remy King is on a mission to get across the wasteland left of America, and nothing will stand in her way - not violent marauders, a spoiled rock star, or an army of flesh-eating zombies. The first line in this book is so awesome, that they had to put it right there in the book description. “This is the way the world ends; not with a bang or a whimper, but[...]

Contagious Reads Horror Con: Celebrating Women in Horror

Today I have an exciting event to tell you about! One of my favorite horror book blogs, Contagious Reads, is going to be hosting a conference celebrating women horror writers. Big shout out to our very own Faith, for giving me the heads up on this one. I'm thrilled to tell you I'll be participating in two panels (Romance in Horror and Zombies: The Struggle To Not Be Pidgeonholed Into One Subgenre) AND (EEEEEK!)... my zombies from FATAL have been nominated for Best Zombies! But the best new is, ALL OF YOU CAN GO. Because it's free and it's on Facebook. Isn't that[...]

It’s dangerous to go alone, take this.

There's a lot of things out there that will kill you, but sitting seems to be creeping up the ladder. Weird, right? I work for a tech company where a lot of people have jumped on the standing desk bandwagon to reduce the number of hours they remain planted on their butts and increasing their chances of chronic disease, reduced life expectancy, kidney disease, crappy mental health, obesity, and just plain death. Death. Death. Death. (Check out this article from Popular Science if you're curious.) I don't know about you, but I sit at work when I'm not running betwe[...]

Zombie Beauty Pageants

I was going to think of a fun title for this post, but honestly, doesn't the simple title grab your attention? Maybe you thought I was kidding when you decided to look at this post, but let me tell you straight up, this post is about exactly what I said it was. Zombie beauty pageants. I did not realize this was such a big thing, but it is, and there's probably one (at least somewhat) near you! They happen at conventions and as part of the intermission at plays (that happened at a community play in Wichita) and county fairs (hey Denver!). A great ongoing one is th[...]
